Canada

Background
Green Cross Canada was attributed the status of a Preparatory Committee at the GCI Council meeting, on 28 February 2006. Its creation was in a way inspired by a regret expressed by the GCI President, Alexander Likhotal, that "in Canada we still do not have our national organization. That's regrettable ... given the experience of Canada in sustainable development activities". Green Cross Canada will address major environmental issues requiring coordinated international action, and in the prevention, mitigation and rehabilitation of potentially catastrophic environmental events, international and domestic. Its main activities will be focused around Consequences of Conflicts and Consequences of Disasters.

International programs
GC Canada will be actively involved in the GCI Legacy of the Cold War program and will work to ensure that it reaches its goals with minimum environmental impact.

It will initiate within the Green Cross family a Consequences of Disasters program/Environmental Disaster Response, aimed at reducing the effect of catastrophic events (hurricanes, tsunamis, forest fires, oil spills, industrial accidents) through prevention, early intervention and rehabilitation.

National programs
GC Canada will work to ensure that the Canadian government's Kananaskis commitment is fully implemented in an environmentally safe manner by means of:

• Creating an outreach program for public awareness and support
• Conducting independent progress assessment
• Advocating program enhancement.
