Millenium Awards

GCI and GGUSA have continued to give their annual Millenium Awards to those whose lives and livelihood embody Global Green's mission of "fostering a global value shift toward a sustainable and secure world."



The Awards are split into 7 categories:

Individual Environmental Leadership Award
Individual activists whose efforts, on their own or through an organisation, empower their community and society toward ecological restoration and a sustainable future. Their courage and innovation inspire others and move them to action.

This was awarded to William McDonough of William McDonough and Partners in 2006; and the 2007 recipient was David W. Orr, the Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics, and Chair of the Environmental Studies Programme at Oberlin College.


Corporate Environmental LeadershipAward
Asuccessful corporate leader who is moving their company from "business as usual" toward a "restorative enterprise." This individual's and company's commitment to resource efficiency, social responsibility and sustainability pervades throughout their company and personal life. This person encourages and inspires chieftains in industry and others to join in pioneering the processes of sustainable development.

This was awarded to Thomas C. Leppert in 2006, from the Turner Corporation; and to Pierre André Senizergues, the CEO and Founder of Sole Technology and Etnies, in 2007.


International Environmental Leadership Award
Given to an individual or organization that has demonstrated international leadership to protect the environment and create a value shift toward a sustainable, secure future. Through their use of collaboration and partnership, they shine a light on environmental challenges and conflicts while providing innovative solutions and initiatives.

The 2006 award went to Sheila Watt-Cloutier from the Inuit Circumpolar Conference; the Award was not given in 2007.

 
Entertainment Industry Environmental Leadership Award
Individuals who exhibit extraordinary leadership reflecting a deep personal commitment to the environment and encourage responsible behaviour amongst the public and within the industry. The honorees support efforts that respond to GCI President Gorbachev's call for entertainment and culture to help educate and encourage a global value shift towards the environment."

This award was not given in 2006, but the 2007 recipient was Jena King, of the Jena and Michael King Foundation.


California/Local Environmental Leadership Award
Given to an individual or organization that has demonstrated environmental leadership in California public policy through innovative legislation, regulations, or initiatives that encourage sustainability.

Fran Pavley, 41st District, of the California Assembly received this Award in 2006; in 2007 it went to the Honorable Gavin Newsome, Mayor of San Francisco.


Community Environmental Leadership Award
Inaugurated in 2006, the Millennium Award for Community Environmental Leadership honors individual ororganizations that have cultivated and led communities to create extraordinary collective environmental achievements.
The first joint recipients of this Award were Nina Simons and Kenny Ausubel of Bioneers in 2006; and in 2007, it was presented to Irmelin DiCaprio.


Founder's Award
This award recognizes those who embody the mission of the Green Cross to "foster a global value shift toward the environment"; whose actions reflect the spirit of President Gorbachev's leadership and vision; and whose dedication has played a significant role in the founding of Green Cross International and Global Green USA.

 


Designing a Sustainable and Secure World" Award
sustainable_awards.jpgGGUSA also holds the "Designing a Sustainable and Secure World Award." This is a New York Award, distinct to the Millenium Awards, to honour those who ‘tear downthe walls' that stand in the way of a sustainable and secure world through innovative design. These designs can be in varying forms - from products to policies to places - and from either individuals or organisations.


The 2006 recipients included:
Elon Musk and Martin Eberhard of Tesla Motors
Larry Aidem, the President of Sundance Travel
and
Alan Rappaport, Chairman, Private Bank, Bank of America
The Award list for 2007 has not yet been published.

UNEP "Champion of the EarthAward"

In 2006, Green Cross International's global work on water won Mikhail Gorbachev the prestigious UNEP"Champion of the Earth" award.



Sanctae Crucis Award
sanctae_crucis.jpgPaul Walker, Director of the Legacy Programme received the award in 2007 from the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Massachusetts, for his "devoted, scholarly attention to matters of paramount importance for the entire world."




2006 ECOMIR Prize
Reiner Braun, President of Global Green Germany, received the 2006 ECOMIR Prize, awarded by the Russian Academy of Sciences, in acknowledgment of his work on sustainable development and peace.

Russian Ecological Award to GC Belarus
ecological_award.jpgOn 3 June, Green Cross Belarus, nominee in the Ecology and Health category, received the 2005 National Ecological Award presented by the Russian Duma and the Academy of Sciences of the Russian Federation. The Optimist team extends its warmest congratulations to our colleagues in Belarus!




The 2005 USGBC Leadership Award goes to Global Green USA
Global Green USA, the American member of Green Cross International, has been chosen as the recipient of the 2005 Leadership Award of the US Green Building Council in the Advocacy and Influence Category. This award recognizes outstanding vision, leadership and commitment to the evolutionof green building design and construction. According to S. Richard Fedrizzi, President, CEO and Founding Chairman of USGBC, "Global Green has long been an invaluable member of the green building movement, and it is an honor to recognize your achievements."

 

Recording Academy Award - Grammy 2004
Mikhail Gorbachev, Bill Clinton, and Sophia Loren received a "Recording Academy Award" Grammy in 2004. In 2003, Mikhail Gorbachev took part in a unique collaborative project that demonstrated the power of music to bring people together. Along with legendary Italian actress, Sophia Loren, and former US President, Bill Clinton, he contributed his time and voice as a narrator for the recording of a CD which paired Prokofiev's famous Peter and the Wolf, with a new composition, Wolf Tracks, byJean-Pascal Beintus, in a new twist to the tale that transforms the wolf from a fearsome creature to one that represents the imperative to cherish and protect natural resources. President Gorbachev's royalties from this project were donated to GCI.

 

Humanitarian Award goes to Mikhail Gorbachev and GCI
humanitarian_award.jpgThe first Life as Profession award ceremony took place in Moscow, at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, on November 30th, 2004. The award is presented to outstanding individuals, agencies, and organisations, to mark significant achievements in medicine, health care, and the preservation of the environment. The award was created on the initiative of the"Assembly of Health," a charitable social development fund, and with the support of the World Health Organization, the Russian Ministry of Health and Social Development, the Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and all of Russia, and the Chairman of the Council of Muftis, Sheikh Ravil Gainutdin.
The award is offered in several categories. GCI and its Chairman, Mikhail Gorbachev were awarded the accolade from the category "Outstanding Contribution to Preserving the Environment." The Award Committee remarked that the Profession of Life award was bestowed upon GCI as public recognition of remarkable achievements of the organisation and the significant role it plays in rallying the positive forces of the international community to tackle global humanitarian problems.


Green Building Council Leadership Award to GG USA
Global Green USA was selected for the 2005 US Green Building Council Leadership Award, in the Advocacy and Influence Category. This award recognises outstanding vision, leadership, and commitment to the evolution of green building design and construction.
According to the President of the US Green Building Council, "Global Green has long been an invaluable member of the green building movement, and it is an honour to recognise your achievements." The leadership Awards Celebration took place on 10th November 2005, during Greenbuild 2005 in Atlanta, GA, with more than 10,000 green building professionals in attendance.
